B.E.College now known as Bengal Engineering and Sciences University, Shibpur has a rich heritage and distinguished tradition of excellence in Engineering and science education spanning over a period of more than 150 years. The Institution was upgraded to a deemed University in 1993 and subsequently the institution was elevated to the status of a fullfledged University on October 1 , 2004.

Established as Bishop's college, later on as Calcutta Civil engineering College with 10 students , it evolved as Bengal Engineering College in 1921, offering courses in several disciplines of Enginerring. 24th November 1856 is it's foundation day. The classes were held in three rooms at the Writers' Building, in the beginning. It celebrated it's 150th anniversary in 2006.This college has seen 3 centuries already !

It has a cherished history, no doubt. The institution has produced innumerable engineers and scientists who have made the college proud by their contributions in the field of Engineering and Sciences.

The vision of the university is:

"We will be one of the best ten engineering and science Universities of the country committed to transforming India to a developed nation and pertaining in the realization of the Developed India vision 2020., through development of the world class Engineers and Scientists".

It is located at Shibpur,Howrah, near the Botanical Gardens, on the outskirts of Kolkata.

The Campus comprises a Sprawling Complex which has a Historical Clock Tower,  2 big  playgrounds, 20 odd Hostels for both boys and girls. The complex also houses a number of Teaching as well as Non-teaching staff quarters.

The Clock tower is a historical landmark for all the students, present and past. It stands tall like the Statue of Liberty and adorns the cover page of many a Alumni Souvenir. The Older buildings of the college remind you of old English building structures, design similar to Castles of Scotland.     Back to Top

The Playgrounds are also aptly named the Lords and the Oval. Interestingly, the ground at Oval looked so lush green, it could give any 1st Class ground in Calcuta, a run for it's money. College championship as well as matches against visiting sides would be held here. The Lords was however, not so great looking but had a gallery for watching matches. Here, mostly soccer was played.

On the college campus itself, there is a full fledged medical unit called Hospital which houses a doctor and medical staff.

The College Campus is also logically divided into 2 areas SahebPara and Muchipara !

DOWNING HALL

was the oldest Hostel possibly and had a English structure. It must have been built in 19th century.Mostly the first year boys would live here. It had 2 prominent wings, East and west and there was an interconnecting wing. The rooms are big and usually housed 4 boys each. The rooms are quite high also. The Hostel was more than a hundred years old. The Hostel Superintendent's room was on the 1st floor where their family lived amid the din and decibels of the wards. This hostel was named after Mr S.F.Downing, the first principal of the college. during power cuts, the atmosphere became a bit eerie and boys would be talking of ghosts and supernatural things. Some of the things would temporarily scare you. One particular story doing the rounds was that of the ghost of S.F.Downing walking the corridors of the hostel and watching whether the boys were studying or making frolic. The Hostel was closed down in 1977. Henceforth all the batches would be of 4 years only. Later on, the Hostel has served as Staff quarters only. The B.Garden Gate was close to this Hostel.

SLATER HALL

was the closed down Hall when I joined the college in 1976.It was located just opposite the DOWNING HALwhich later on served for Joint Entrance Examinations.It was also a very old structure.

HOSTELs 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16

were bulit possibly much later in sixties. These Hostels are of the same design. They are 4 storied and at the middle of each Hostel would be a study room, which was usually, occupied by the more burly dada type of boy or some boys who would not mix freely with others. Only the Study rooms had 2 ceiling fans. Others had to make good with the breeze coming from the Hooghly, another name for the River Ganges.The dining Hall would be located at the ground floor and on each floor, 2 of the so-called Barrack Servants would run their private canteens. The duty of each barrack servant would be to see that the boys who are their customers, ,get proper food at College Mess and they also kept food covered in trays, in case boys went to see Night shows.

Hostels 7 to 13 are in the SahebPara and 14,15,16 are in Muchipara. These Hostels are designed as flats. They are flat and vertical!

WOLFENDEN HALL

The Boarders are called Wolves, jokingly. This is the Hall, most glamourous, where the most extrovert would go.It is not the Hostel for the studious type! People who had left a mark or wanted to make a mark preferred this hostel. It has an aura about it an is located right across the Oval ground.It used to be an expensive Hostel,so far as food bills are concerned. During College Re-unions, one could find the whole front of the Hostel would get illuminated with the colorful bulbs to look great from a distance.Here, final and pre-final years' Students are allowed to stay.

HEATON HALL

had closed down long ag. It was a 2 storey Hostel with an old structure. It served as the N.C.C.training camp. It is located very close to the main gate.

RICHARDSON HALL

was a 3 storey Hostel and was possibly built in early sixties. Here, only final and pre-final years' students normally stayed. The design was different from that of Downing Hall as well as Hostels 7-16. It had 3 wings at 120 degrees separation. Usually, the final year boys stayed at the 2nd floor, which was more airy. The Hostel had no fans. It was located near the main gate and a slushy pond existed near it. Facing this Hostel is the ground "Lords".

MCDONALD HALL

was a 3 storey Hostel and was possibly built in early sixties. Here, only final and pre-final years' students stay. It's design is same as that of the Richardson Hall, Sen Hall & Sengupta Hall and is located adjacent to it.

PANDYA HALL

was a Hostel for post graduate students. Now It is a ladies' Hostel.
